The itineraries proposed are classified according to the difficulties that seasonally the land presents. In order to provide visitors a useful indication to their choice, and bearing in mind that the area of Pantalica can be reached as from Ferla as from Sortino, routes are marked with the consequent acronyms: T-and-EE-EEA.
T= path hikers elementary (itineraries evident on streets, mule or comfortable paths). E= path hikers (itineraries that take place on paths and tracks path, grassy slopes or detritici). EE= route for experienced hikers (routes involving individual passages of rocky easy climbing). EEA= route for experienced hikers with equipment (routes involving the use of the equipment touring for the progression, and a self-insurance).
(The times are calculated on the basis of a hiker that runs 3kms per hour, increased by about 20 percent).
ITINERARY #1 Difficulties E. travelled entirely in about 3 hours. Difference in height and down about m.200. After leaving Ferla through Via Umberto and after having covered 9 kilometres, you will get to "Sella Filiporto" (The saddle of Filiporto) the aeasiest to go into Pantalica. From here is already possible to observe the firstl agglomerations of funerary cells, that will accompanyyou all the way. Through this first itinerary, in fact, you can arrive at the gates of the necropolis by the same car, which can be parked on the apron opening on the right side of the road. From this Piazzale, keeping on walking you reach the so-called "Trabocchetto" ("pitfall"), and the church of San micidiaro. From here starts a path that leads to the evocative Valley dell'Anapo (Anapo Valley). Returning to the provincial road, about 400 metres, you wil reach the top of the upland and on the right you will come across an a dirt road that leads directly to the "Anaktoron".Also from the castle of the prince, continues a path of about 4 kilometres, which leads to the necropolis Southside. From the Anaktoron, resuming the asphalted road, you see on the right, at about 300 m., a path that leads to the "necropolis of cavetta", and at about 150m. from this, on the left, is already possible to admire the Byzantine Village of Cavetta. Continuing the descent to get to another large sqare where parking is possible, and marked by ythe end of the asfphalto; from here, you can admire, in all its beauty, the necropolis north-westside. Just embarked on the right you will hardily see, a small passage; this leads to the so discussed " lutta turata," while if we return to the main path, at about 20 metres on the left we are facing the Church of the Crucifix, while in the panorama below, it is already possible to discern the "Cave of Bats". Going down the path down to the Valley we are going in the midst of north necropolis and its River Calcinara (or Bottigliera); from here you can set off in various directions, to the discovery of great wonders.
ITINERARY #2 Difficulties E. Entire running estimated time about 3 hours. Difference in uphill and downhill m. 200. Leaving the town of Sortino southward and turning into Via Pantalica, you will get to the provincial road Sortino-Pantalica, that comes to an end after about 6 kilometers and along which is already possible to discern the necropolis northside. With the interruption of the road, marked by the end of the asphalted stretch, begins the path that leads in view of the mentioned necropolis . Along the path is already possible to observe the first agglomerations of funerary cells, while in the panorama below, you can glimpse the Cave of bats, reachable by means of a ladder drawn in the rock on the left side, in truth, not easy to identify. Continuing along the path you can admire some sheer walls with rows of graves: is the north-west necropolis. Continuing again you will get to to the River Calcinara, which has to be crossed to go the up to the path: here we are above the northern village, of which remain some rocky dwellings of the Byzantine era. On the right of the path is located the church of the Crucifix. Continuing to rise,at about m. 50 from the small Church, we glimpse at bottom of the valley, on the left, some masses of stone: these are the remains of an ancient bridge. Keeping on walking you will get to the end of the path, where the provincial road leading to Ferla begins . From here you can then rely on the first itinerary to continue entirely the exciting path of the enchanting necropolis North, North-Westside.
ITINERARY #3 Difficulty grade T. It is about 12 kilometres long, and achievable, as from Ferla, as from Sortino. Running time about 4 Hours on a route plan. Leaving the village of Ferla towards Siracusa, after about 3 km, you will arrive at the entrance of the Nature Reserve "Pantalica-VALLE dell'Anapo "(shelter of the forest ranger). The walk begins on a dirt road (ancient route of rail Siracusa-Vizzini), which runs along the entire river Anapo. Along the way you have to go through various galleries of different length; after about 30 minutes walk is already well visible the necropolis Southside whose touching beauties attracts also the less attentive tourists . At about 6 km from entry you will get to "Casa Specchi" (Mirrors House), a Masseria (Farm) restored by the forest rangers, where you can pause in the equipped area. Alongside the fork towards "Casa Specchi" you will see a very steep path passing over the gallery entrance station and leading to an ancient oil mill whose tools are now kept in the station of Pantalica. Going on that way you will walk along some very comfortable break areas where you can stop and admire the wonders around; from here, deviating on the left you can visit the Fontana del Giglio (the Lily Fountain) . Continuing along the dirt road ,turning right, you will get to to the picturesque Pantalica station, from here you can still keep to stroll along the Anapo valley floor . On the left starts un uphill path that leads directly to the church of San adorned, from which it is possible to continue towards the other necropolis-sides according to the routes already offered. We remind you that the uphill paths leading to the North necropolis are about five; through these paths you can also reach the "necropolis of cavetta," and again the "necropolis Filipporto". If instead of taking the paths you continue along the old rail track, you will always be surrounded by immense wonders between archaeology, a rich vegetation and interesting fauna, so to enter the gate located a few steps away from Sortino forest rangers' shelter (opposite from where you entered).
ITINERARY #4 Difficulties EE. clockwise travelled in about 3 hours. Difference in descent of about 400 meters, in ascent of 500 metres. counterclockwise travelled in approximately 6 hours. Difference in descent and ascent 500 m. That is the itinerary that the CAI and WWF of Siracusa prefer for their tours in Pantalica, because this is a logic circuit that includes both the "Rocca "and the valley floor rivers . From the starting point of tour II, after going up the asphalted road, and after walking about 200 meters, there is a gate on the right (the keys are held by Sortino's forest rangers) from which starts a wide downhill path that passes by some houses and ends in the valley floor by a rudimentary ford that allows the crossing of the river Anapo. Through the river, a path on the road leads to the flowing point of the Calcinara into the Anapo, one of the most beautiful landscape of Iblei. Then you will reach the former Anapo's railway. Now you have to follow the small road towards the old railway station of Pantalica and then you will have two choices.
1) At about 2 kilometres from the intersaction, on the right (sign) a path climbs up towards the "Rocca di Pantalica". After about half an hour's ascent you will meet a crossroads, not well reported, that leads to a beautiful Belvedere and to the rocky small church of San Nicolicchio. Going on up the path, you will reach another crossroads. Going to the left (a longer route) you reach San Micidiario and the Sella di Filiporto (saddle of Filiporto) where, taking the asphalted road on the right and passing alongside the necropolis of north-east, you will get to the "Anaktoron".Turning right, instead, you get to the Anaktoron more quickly. From Anaktoron you must then follow the provincial road. Walk along the road, on the left to enjoy the Byzantine village of cavetta, while from the right, you can get down along the path, up to the "belvedere" (lookout) of the homonymous necropolis. back on the asphalt road, it is necessary to continuesto the car parking located the end of the road to Ferla. On the right of car parking a path leads to the cave knows as "lutta truvata". 2) Instead of taking the uphill path towards the Rocca, you will reach the station of Pantalica, where the forest ranger has arranged a small museum (for a visit it is necessary to advise the Inspectorate of Siyracuse). Therefore, about 200 meters after the station, a path on the right (cartel forestry) will (climbing) to the Rocca, passing from the belvedere necropolis South. This path, indeed more convenient of the first (even if it exceeds a drop more) ends at a crossroads place not far from the church of San micidiario.andando on the left you will reach the saddle of filiporto, while on the right you will reach all'anaktoron passing from the crossroad to the church of San adorned (now downhill) and tombs to room.
